Making It Happen
Characters: NARRATOR AALIYAH, curious and always asking questions MATEO, her friend MRS. CHEN, teacher MR. PATEL, business owner
Scene 1: Classroom NARRATOR: It is the middle of the school day. Students are sitting at their desks while Mrs. Chen writes on the board. Aaliyah raises her hand. [Mrs. Chen turns from the board.] AALIYAH: Mrs. Chen, how do people actually turn ideas into real stuff? Like businesses or art? MRS. CHEN: [Smiles.] That's a good question. A long time ago, artists didn't always have money to do their work. So wealthy people, called patrons, would help them. MATEO: [Leans over.] Like… they just paid for it? MRS. CHEN: Pretty much. They believed in the artist or the idea, so they helped make it happen.
Scene 2: Walking Home NARRATOR: Later that day, Aaliyah and Mateo walk home together, thinking about what they learned. [They walk side by side with backpacks.] MATEO: That kind of sounds like today, just… different. AALIYAH: Yeah, like people still need help to get started.
Scene 3: At a Store NARRATOR: As they pass a small shop, they see Mr. Patel working inside. [Mr. Patel arranges items on a shelf. Aaliyah waves.] AALIYAH: Hey, Mr. Patel! How did you open your store? MR. PATEL: [Looks up and smiles.] It took some time. I had an idea, but I didn't have all the money I needed. So I got a loan from a bank. MATEO: So the bank helped you start it? MR. PATEL: Exactly. Banks help people turn ideas into businesses.
Scene 4: Back in Class NARRATOR: The next day, the class talks about what Aaliyah and Mateo learned. [Students sit at their desks. Mrs. Chen stands at the front.] AALIYAH: So back then, patrons helped artists and learning. MATEO: And now, banks help people start businesses. MRS. CHEN: That's right. It's all part of a free enterprise system. People can come up with ideas and try to make them work. AALIYAH: [Nodding.] So no matter what, people still need support to get started. MRS. CHEN: Exactly, and those ideas can grow into something hopeful.
